Well, all this is interesting to me, anyway, and that's what matters here. The Internet is a terrible thing for someone like me, who finds almost everything interesting.

Just symbolic
It's just symbolic, right? If people like you are forced to ride in the back of the bus, what difference does it make? :)
Actually, that understates it. Marriage is a legal contract in America, and it's honored by federal, state, and local governments in all sorts of ways. Being forced to ride in the back of a bus might be considered almost trivial in comparison.
But it's a good example, nonetheless. The issue is whether or not we treat people with fairness and equality. People have rights. And their sexual orientation makes no more difference than the color of their skin.
