If we human beings have really been designed and guided by an omniscient, omnipotent, and benevolent god, who created the whole universe specifically for our benefit - and then, when we screwed up, who zapped his son/himself down to Earth to teach us the right direction again - then we've done pretty darn poorly, I'd say. All that help and this is the best we can do? How embarrassing!
But if we evolved naturally, just one of the species of primates on a nondescript planet in an uncaring universe, who's had to struggle for every tiny advance in knowledge, all by ourselves, learning everything the hard way,... well, we're not doing all that badly then, are we? Some of us are even admirable.
It's a slow, hard climb, but it's all our doing. We should be proud of what we've accomplished, so far.
(Edit: And it's actually rather empowering.)
