What's next? Republicans are redefining "rape." Is there anything which better puts the lie to their claim that it's all about government spending now? This is the same old loony "culture war" stuff we've seen for the past decade.

And so it's equally clear that these are the same people who brought us record-breaking budget deficits - even before they collapsed the economy - with tax cuts for the rich and two unnecessary and unwise wars, at least one against a completely innocent country, without raising taxes to pay for them. (Of course, according to the GOP, cutting taxes on the rich was going to pay for itself, as was the war in Iraq. Yeah, right. And how did that work out?)

When they created a bubble in arcane financial instruments, with their tax cuts and their mania for deregulation, which then burst in the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression, we were already in a deep, deep hole. That's not how you want to start bad economic times! But Republicans claim that it was someone else who did all that, not the new GOP.

Of course, the first thing the "new" GOP did, upon re-taking the House of Representatives, was to extend the tax cuts for the wealthiest of Americans and to change the Democrats' pay-as-you-go rules to exempt all tax cuts, so Republicans could freely increase government debt. And now they're jumping all over the old "culture war" stuff, like telling women that it's not really rape if they're drugged at the time.

Does this sound like a "new" GOP to you? How can they find people dumb enough to believe that? It's just astonishing, don't you think?
